What you might have been

Dear Friends

As you prepare for the weekend I would like to challenge you with one of George Eliot’s most inspiring quotes:

“It is never too late to become what you might have been”

This thought holds both a tremendous promise of embracing what you were created for, but also a sobering reminder that, in the end, it may come down to “might have been”.  The world’s best coach has frequently reminded me that, if you want to unearth the greatest human potential, go dig in your nearest graveyard. There lie many “might have been” lives.  But…this is not meant to be your story, or mine.

If you require any confirmation, I will oblige: God is not holding before you the low road.  He loves you as He loves His own Son (John 17:23) — He is calling you to the high road.  Away from a life that is focused on carving out a living in relative safety, and into a daring walk with Him, filled with love, adventure and a fierce passion to be with each other.

Our culture teaches us that a life devoid of any kind of hardship should be one of our chief pursuits.  To the contrary, could it be that the challenge you are facing right now contains the raw building blocks of the person He intends you to become?  Sacrifice, surrender, utter dependence and trust — these are the basic ingredients earmarking a life that flows out of and arouses our Father’s intense love towards us.

You can ask God (right now, and with the utmost confidence) that He would lead you on the high road.   As you do so, take courage in the promise we have in Phil 1:6 “…being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ”.

As you read this I pray that the Holy Spirit would start to call to remembrance the passion that you have felt in the past, but is so often eroded by the cares of this world. As you reach out to Him during this weekend may you see clearly who you truly are in Jesus of Nazareth, His Son.  Seek first His Kingdom, and He will lead you, never to forsake you.  There is no safer place.

As sons and daughters of the King, can we rephrase  Eliot together?

“It is never too late to become much, much more than we might have been”

Glory to Him
